Before proceeding, I want to disclose that I am NOT a Jazzercise instructor or Jazzercise franchisee, nor am I writing for a competing company. My goal is to give you factual details about the company, the service, and franchise compensation requirements.
At the end of this Jazzercise Franchise review, I will also share a marketing strategy that will set you far ahead of the majority of entrepreneurs.

Jazzercise: The Company
Headquartered in Carlsbad, California, and was founded by Judi Sheppard Missett in 1969. The company is a dance fitness program and home based franchise company that employs 250 corporate staff members and owns two fitness centers, one in Oceanside, California and the other in La Costa, California. Judi Sheppard Missett operates as the CEO. Her daughter, Shanna Missett Nelson is the company’s President.
The company mission statement is: We develop and market fun and effective fitness programs and products that enhance the well-being of people of all ages.
Jazzercise “gives back to the community” in the amount of $27 million to date. The money is raised by its many instructor/franchisees and is given to a range of charities that meet the company mission statement including; Kids Get Fit, a free workout program for children and the CyberStretch Giveaway Program, a free computer safety software program to reduce repetitive stress injuries.
The company expanded its holdings in 1980 by adding Jazzercise Apparel which offers a complete line of fitness apparel, activewear, accessories, Jazzercise DVDs, and logo merchandise.
In 1984 another division was formed, JM DigitalWorks, which provides broadcast quality video production, post-production and duplication services. JM also has provided services to a number of corporate clients, including but not limited to, CBS Sports and Google, Inc.
The international franchise business, Jazzercise, has a network of more than 7,800 instructors teaching more than 32,000 classes weekly in 32 countries. For calendar year 2010, Jazzercise posted its most successful year with system wide sales of $96 million.
Jazzercise: The workout program
The Jazzercise workout program offers a combination of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, and kickboxing movements. Benefits include increased cardio fitness, strength, and flexibility. Every 10 weeks a new dance and fitness routine is released which is choreographed by CEO, Judi Sheppard Missett, with the latest hits in the music industry.
Each Jazzercise session lasts approximately one hour, and costs vary as each franchise is owned independently with varied operating costs. Prices can be as low as $35 per month or a per session cost could be charged.
There are seven different class formats to accommodate any level of fitness needed or desired; senior, child, pregnant, or low-impact. From body sculpting and stretching to Jazzercise Express (a 30 minute workout) there is an option.
Jazzercise Apparel offers a line of exercise and fitness clothing in all sizes, including accessories. You may also purchase DVDs, gifts cards, and more. Just a word here; Jazzercise has the bases covered by offering a non- gender product that is “on trend” and spans all age groups. The support group is a built in plus for the majority that needs to be held accountable to working time in to a busy schedule for our health and well-being.
However, a definite and specific marketing plan needs to be in place to build a loyal customer base. By having that in action from the beginning, it will be much easier to set and reach short and long-term goals.
Jazzercise: The Franchise
Jazzercise Franchise Agreement: As owners of Jazzercise franchises, *instructors operate as independent entities with full corporate support capabilities. A franchise purchase fee in the U. S. is $1,000; $500 in other countries. Instructors pay 20 percent of gross revenues to Jazzercise monthly with a minimum fee of $50.
In addition, monetary requirements are: comprehensive general liability insurance ($185-$225 per year), ASCAP/BMI royalty fees ($45-88$ per year), music for workout routines ($200-$800) per year. Other requirements include: sound system, speakers, microphone, stage/ platform, DVD player, computer system, and phone to receive messages.
A franchise/instructor will also incur the cost of renting a facility per hour or leasing a building.
Total purchase and operating costs of a Jazzercise franchise can be approximately $3,000 to $76,000, depending on individual franchisee business plans.
*You may also become a franchisee as an Associate/Floating Substitute. Start up cost and earnings will vary.
Jazzercise Instructor Certification: All instructor/franchise applicants must be trained and certified before becoming a franchise owner. Training consists of:
1. Health and Fitness (includes a 100 question written exam).
2. Performance (with practical exam)
3. CPR (certification must be maintained yearly)
All trainings and curriculum meet AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) Basic Standards and Guidelines.
Note: It is vital to invest a bit of money to have a good franchise attorney look at the franchise agreement and the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). Jazzercise has a 40+ year solid tract record. However, you still need an attorney and accountant. It can save you big money down the road, and make the difference in your success rate.
Jazzercise: The Right Fit for You
In closing I think Jazzercise is fantastic. The management’s track record is proof of the company’s intent and staying power. Additionally, it can, of course, be lucrative for the right person.
However, at the end of the day your success is not guaranteed. To profit with Jazzercise, you must have a good bit of disposable income, extensive business management skills, and a working knowledge of branding and marketing.
One alternative of this is a virtual business. The concept of Attraction Marketing puts you in front of the masses that are already looking for what you do. We use a marketing system that includes training, websites, email auto responders, order processing (cash register), and online branding.
This is not limited to, but can include, a network marketing company. However, even if the thought of doing business online appeals to you, and network marketing doesn’t, keep affiliate marketing in mind. Virtually every product you buy or shop for on line is someone’s affiliate product. And they became an affiliate for free.
